planting

Question
Hi Viktoria.

We have a cement patio with four cut-outs in the cement.  They were filled with all kinds of yuck and I just cleaned them out.  So now I have four big holes!  They are each about a foot square and 1.5 inches deep.  If I was to fill with dirt...Do you have a suggestion of something that may grow in such shallow dirt with cement underneath?  This area receives bright direct sunlight for most of the day.  ?

Answer
I thought I already answered this question!

I suggested sedums and creeping thymes, both of which come in many varieties.  Another option would be to plant containers (herbs would be a good choice if the patio is near the kitchen) and set them in the cutouts if you want something with more height.
