Planting annuals

Question
QUESTION: I was wondering when is the time to plant annuals, summer and winter annuals?

and also when should i begin poinsettias?

ANSWER: John,
Thanx for your question.  I usually start my annual seeds a few weeks before the last frost because generally, they germinate quickly and have high light requirements which cause them to get spindly indoors under my shop lights.

I need to know what you mean by winter annuals before I can answer that question.

Poinsettias are started by cuttings.  I have never started poinsettias from cuttings.  You can buy the non-rooted cuttings in large quantities if you have a greenhouse in which you want to start growing them.  You can contact your local State Extension Service for commercial information regarding poinsettias.  Here is a link regarding rooting poinsettia cuttings.
http://www.gpnmag.com/Propagating-Poinsettias-article8466  It is my understanding that poinsettia cuttings are started in the summertime, but commercial propagation is way out of my league.  I'm just a hobbyist.

I hope this helps.

QUESTION: the winter annuals are pansies.

Answer
Hi John,
Thanx for the additional information.  Pansies need 14-16 weeks from seed to flowering.  So, plan your seeding as such.  For instance, if you want to have flowering plants by September 15, start pansies anywhere from the middle to the end of May.  I assume you live in the deep South or some other warm region where you will be able to enjoy the blooms all winter.  Just calculate 98-112 days before projected blooming.

I hope this helps.
