calla lilly planting

Question
I was given a gorgeous call Lilly and it has been blooming continuously. I live in Pennsylvania-- should I keep it potted and what do i do with it over the winter?

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  If your calla is colored (pink, yellow, etc.) it will eventually go dormant this summer and the foliage will disappear and the corm will "rest" for a couple of months and then it will send up new growth and begin the blooming process again this winter.  You can plant the calla outdoors for the summer but dig it up after the first frost and store it in the base ment where it won't freeze but where it might be cool, dry and dark.  You can keep growing it as a houseplant but it will go dormant from time-to-time for a couple of months making you think it is dead.  Don't water it very much and it will come back.  I hope this helps.

Tom
