transplanting iris

Question
I was just in upstate NY and dug up my grandmother's iris, since she's moving into sr citizen home. I have brought them back to NC with me. They hadn't bloomed yet, but I had to take them then. Should I transplant them now (we are heading towards 3 months of extreme heat) or trim them up and wait until fall?

Answer
Hi Priscilla,
Thanx for your question.  I would go ahead and plant my iris now and water them once week if you're not having regular rain.  Sprinkle some bone meal in the planting area to help nourish the plants.  They should be fine.  Iris are very tough.  I hope this helps.
Tom
