Too Much Rain

Question
QUESTION: Hello Nick
You helped me out about 2 wks. ago.  I was planting a garden all around my
mom's home.  Everything was growing GREAT.  Then we started having rain;
as you know.  Now some of my plants don't look so good...think they are
water logged.  What should I do?  I thought maybe dig out the ones that look
bad and add pebbles in the bottom of the holes.  I don't know what would
happen if I were to dig up a plant that was planted 2-2 1/2 weeks ago.

Thanks,

Paula in Port St. Lucie

ANSWER: Hi again! Paula when you planted these did you put down potting soil, or sometype of top soil, or did you put them directly into the sandy soil? Hopefully you didn't augment with a heavy potting type soil, because that would be your problem, its holding too much water and could be rotting the rootsystem of your plants. Nick

QUESTION: Hi Nick
Once again I can count on your FAST reply!!!  I did not put potting soil, I just
planted them. I thought I would get them all in and a week or so later start
fertlizing...then the rain started. I know the ground is holding too much
water.  I think the soil on one side of the house is not as sandy as the north
side.  The plants on the north are fine, except for one the leaves at the top
are getting spots and kinda' white.

How can I dry up the other side?  I don't want to even think of any rotting
away.

Thanks Nick

Paula

Answer
Hmmm..theres really not much you can do when plants are in the ground except move them if the ground is to moisture retentive; it sounds like that side should probably have elephant ears, bananas or some plant that loves water; I would lift them, gently shake off any wet soil and relocate them; often its a hit or miss deal when planting annuals and perennials, I find certain areas around my house very hostile to flowers also, and that is where my resilient plants go.
