Hawaiian Schefflera

Question
Hi Nick,
I have a large schefflera that's probabley 15 yrs old. It's outside and is much taller than our one story home. The freeze really did the top in and all the leaves and most stems have fallen. How do we go about pruning this tree? Do we remove the stems or just make large cuts in the tall branches? It was and still is my favorite.

Answer
Hi Tina, go ahead and cut it way back, it should be severely pruned once a year anyway, believe me , you can't hurt it, a very resilient plant that will grow profusely after you cut it back to about half its original size. This plant should be kept away from contact with the house also, to discourage termite and carpenter ant entry. Nick
