Robilini Palm

Question
I purchased four beautiful 7' tall Robilini Palms. They are acutely root bound. How much of the root can I take off for re-potting with out damaging the trees? They are in 10 gal pot with almost no soil & if re-potted as is would require much larger & unmanageable pots.

Answer
Hi Ralph, that is the problem with putting certain plants in smaller containers, for they will undoubtedly outgrow them and you are faced with the quandary of what to do now; in your case, you really need to put them in larger containers, or risk stunting the Palm , which will lead to eventual decline. Palms are meant to be in larger containers and if you sever roots to accommodate the existing pot, then stress and inevitable decline will be the result. Nick
