indoor majesty palm

Question
I just purchased a majesty palm yesterday for our indoor office at the front of our house.  Our office has a very large window, but we face the north.  I've read online that this particular palm is a tough plant to keep looking beautiful, but I'm going to at least try.  Can you give me some tips other than what I've already read?  I've read they need a lot of light and regular waterings.  Any advice?

Answer
Taryn. The Majesty Palm does best in a humid environment with medium light (not bright); most people make the mistake of keeping it in the pot they purchased it in, too long. The pots they come in are transient nursery containers meant only to maintain the plant on a temporary basis (often they are already pot bound). Transplant the palm into a larger decorative container with pea stone lining the bottom 2 inches; this ensures that the roots don't sit in moisture, inviting root rot. Mist the fronds on a daily basis, this will keep mites away and imitate the humid condition it thrives in its natural environment;allow the soil to dry out between waterings and you only need to fertilize it four times a year with a well balanced granular fertilizer (about a pound per 4 foot palm). The palm will need to be repotted in a year with new medium, because salt build up is a problem from the fertilizer; you take it out of the pot rinse the roots and gently spread them and then replant in the same container until it outgrows it and you need to move up to a larger container. I know this is a lot to swallow, but if you follow this advice, your Parlour Palm will do just fine (Parlour palm is a Majesty Palm). good luck Nick
