Dog urine and trees

Question
My male cairn terrier peed on a small spruce which had been planted approximately 1 week prior to the incident. Now there are brown spots...is he the likely culprit, and if so, is there some type of spray I can use on the tree. He is fed a good quality food.

Thanks,

J

Answer
There are several dog repellents that will keep dogs off of trees and shrubs. Check with your local pet store for these. The problem is the salt content of the urine. The salt blocks the cells of the leaves and kills the leaf. If there is enough the young tree can be killed. The quality of the food has nothing to do with the damage.
