roses/frost

Question
my rose bushes were starting to leaf out, and we went into a freeze for several days.  now the leaves are black and hanging.  what do I need to do, or are my roses toast?  I live in Ohio.

Answer
The bud eyes are where the leaves grow out off on the rose canes and they are capable of producing three sets of leaves without damaging the vigor of the rose bush. Frost will easily burn the new growth but another set of leaves is not far behind. If the frost was very severe then it may have killed the bud eyes ability to make another set of leaves. If this is the case then no growth will come from them. However all you have to do is simply prune back to the next bud eye (bud eyes look like the creases in your knuckles) and the rose will take off again. Keep in mind that roses can make a nice healthy bush from only one inch of a cane. Hope this helps.
