miniature rose

Question

roseleaf
I bought my miniature rose during winter and it seemed to die off a little - the leaves dropped off and the remained roses did not open. Towards the end of winter it started really growing and now it has a lot of leaves and new flowers. A few weeks ago I had a massive problem with what I thought were green fly but I seemed to successfully get rid of these with a mild washing up liquid solution. Over the past few days I have noticed that some of the leaves have brown patches like part of the leaves are dying, these have a transparent look to them and some other brown spots which seem to sit on top of the leaf like little nodules. My plant lives indoors and has recently been re-potted. I water it regularly and give it plant food every few weeks. I live in the UK.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions you could give me.
Thank you!

Answer
Hi Natalie,  Roses can get a lot of disease problems, so making sure you rose is healthy makes it easier.  If it is a grafted rose or mini like you have , you need to purchase rose spray for aphids, leaf spot and thrips.  I think the green flies maybe thrips.  In some cases leaves with spots need to be picked off and disposed of on the newer types of roses.   Antique roses are the strongest of all roses and take the least care.  They also like a slightly acidic soil,  compost, and mulch and a good weekly watering.  Hope that helps.  kathy
