Indoor rose bush has flying insects

Question
Dear Lynnette,
I have an indoor yellow rose bush in my kitchen that has within the last week become infested with a small Nat like bug.  I do not believe these are fruit flies.  They appear to have made a home in the soil surrounding my rose. Do you have a suggestion on getting rid of the pests?  Thanks Jessica

Answer
Not only did you buy a nice little mini rose, you also bought the fungus knats with it. These little fly like insects lay their eggs in the damp soil and when they hatch they fly around. They will not damage your rose but if they get too numerous then they may feed off the rose feeder roots and this will damage your rose.  These knats must have a damp soil so you could just stop watering and let the soil dry out and that will kill all the eggs. However if you think this will hurt the rose, then use any mild insecticide such as Trounce or anything that has a pyrethrin base as there is no need to use the big guns on them. They will die quickly with a mild insecticide.A very common problem with any house plant. Hope this helps.
