rose buds sheared off

Question
Our roses have some buds, the other day we noticed that some of the buds have been cut about half an inch below the bud, the cut is straight, and the buds are on the ground. Thank you for your help in this matter,

Answer
This is a strange thing to happen to your roses. Were the buds close to the ground or higher up as this might give you a clue to what did it. Insects don't sheer off rose buds but usually eat them leaving a half eaten bud on the rose bush.It takes something with stronger beak or mouth to do it. Certain birds has a nasty habit of pecking off the buds but they usually eat part of them. Rabbits or any other small animals such as squirrels, could also be the culprits, but again they eat them or take them away with them. Deer will also eat rose buds but they don't leave them on the ground. It sounds like something tried them and then didn't like the taste. I would really be interested if you find out who or what has done this to your rose bushes.
