No rose buds

Question
I planted a climbing rose (blue violet) in a corner of my yard with lots of sun.  It has been 3yrs and there have been no flowers or rose buds, but only green foliage.  The vines grow tall and climb all over the fence with dark green foliage but no buds at all.  The house is a newly developed area (5 yrs old house) and I am wondering if this problem could be because of the soil?  All my other impatients/hydrangeas are in the same soil and are growing well except for my rose.   Please help?

Answer
What you have described is not unusual for a climber. Climbers are very vigorous and will make a lot of  growth the first five years, then they settle down and make flowers. because they are using up most of their energy growing, there is little left over for flowering. Also if you have good soil or are fertilizing your climber monthly, that only encourages more green growth. I would stop all fertilizing to slow the rose down and make it concentrate of blooming. Even next spring, no fertilizing until you see the flowers coming. The fact that your rose is growing well means it is happy and healthy so don't worry about it, some climbers will even take as long as five years before they produce flowers.
