Bites Out of Rose Buds -- What causes them?

Question
I have noticed what looks like little circular bites out of our rose buds. The are
about 1/4 inch in diameter and may 1/8 inch deep. Some buds have several of
these spots. Is this from a caterpillar or something else? I could upload a picture
if it would help.

Answer
Caterpillars usually eat the leaves but beetles will eat the buds. There should be some evidence of beetles around the base of the rose. Beetles eat at night so this is the time to look for them. There are rose sprays that will kill beetles just ask at any garden center. Make sure that you spray well all around the base of the rose bush as that is where they will lay their eggs. beetles don't stay very long and may well be gone in a few weeks.
