Sawfly

Question
I am a new rose gardener and discovered too late this year that my roses were infected with Sawfly Larvae...given the lack of insecticides available, what is the best recommended treatment or is it too late for this batch of roses.

Answer
Depending where you garden, there can be different types of sawflies. The adult  lays it's eggs on the underside of the rose leaves and when the caterpillars hatch, they eat only the undersides of the leaves which gives them that lacy look. The feed mainly at night time and then drop off onto the ground during the day. You can pick them off at night with a flashlight or spray them then with an insecticidal soap which is still allowed. During the day it is a good idea to also spray all around the base of the rose bush to get rid of where they are hiding.Keep a watch out for them around the time when the apple trees begin to bloom. Using a hose to spray them off also works as the larvae cannot get back onto the rose bush. Just concentrate on the undersides of the leaves.  This is a common pest on roses and has nothing to do with how you grow the roses.
