what is this?

Question
i have a rose bush and noticed tumor like growths on the stem and sometimes on the stem where the leaf connects that can be the size of a chesnut...i cut one off and cut it open...there were tiny little bugs..the ones that were moving looked like tiny little flies...do you know what this is and what i should do?? thanks

Answer
The tumors are called Rose Galls and the whole rose will be infected. It would be best to dig it up and burn it as this problem will not go away and the rose will already be weaken by making the tumors. If you are going to plant another rose in the same hole, dig out about half the soil and replace it . Also get rid of the old soil as it can contain problems from the galls. If the galls are mossy or have spines on them, then they will be  produced by the Gall Wasps.
