climbing plants or ivy

Question
Hello. We have installed a split rail fence with screening to keep the dogs safe around our property and are looking to plant something that would both climb, spread, and look nice. The fence is 5' high by 180' long. We would appreciate any suggestions as what to plant there that would grow fairly fast. We are located in the Northeast United States in what would be considered zone 6.
Thanks so much for your time and assistance. Jim Hess

Answer
I have seen Clematis used beautifully on split rail fences.  Use chicken wire wrapped around the fence and it will grow up and over.
There are many clematis; some early growers, some summer and one in the fall.
Clematis like their roots to be shaded--mulch or grass clippings.
