Pothos Ivy Watering

Question
Hello i was reading your answer to a question about the cutting of the Ivy's which helped me a lot. I would also like to no how often do you water the Ivy's? Another question, I've always loved Ivy's since i was a young girl because my grandmother had a porch full of them, and I've always had ivy in my house and was good at growing them, as the older people would say, i had the "green thumb" for growing Ivy's. Well about a year ago, i had an ivy for 6 to 9 months and it would not grow. I changed the soil, moved it around in my house and it would not grow, do you have any idea why? I live in Natchitoches, La.

Answer
Carla,
Your plant is called Devil's IVY(it is a common name for the plant#. It is often classified as Pothos. More correctly it is now classified as Epipremnum(being the Genus) aureum(being the species).  English ivies are Hedera helix. It sounds confusing but in the scientific world in order to keep things accurate plants are given binomial Latin names. That way scientist in Japan, Russia, USA, South America, Etc. will know they are using or talking about the same plant.

Pothos don't do well in direct sunlight#Morninig sun exposure is usually OK#. They prefer a bright room or artificial light. The watering care is similar for most plants #excluding Orchids, cacti and a few other special type plants). Water your plant based on how much it weighs when thoroughly watered VS when they are ready to be watered again. Plants die from too frequent waterings, not from how much water you give them at one time. Pick the pot up and feel how heavy it is after watering it thoroughly. Don't water it again until it feels considerably lighter and the soil top of the soil is light in color. Depending on plant types, sunlight exposure and pot size plants will need water at many different rates from once a day to once a month or more.

Let me know how this works for you. I teach this watering technique to all my classes
Good luck,
Rick
