Question
we purchased potted bogies from a nursery with great flowers...planted them in the ground according to instructions...all the flowers fell off and now 6 months later still no flowers. The plants are growing great, they get watered 2x a week...in good sun...in delray beach , florida...why no flowers???. also we trim the plants back often as they grow very quick.

Answer
Hi Anton,
Thanx for your question.  It is common for flower and foliage to fall off of bougainvilleas when they have been transplanted.  It sounds like you are watering them well.  Lawn fertilizers and other high nitrogen fertilizers can adversely affect flowering shrubs if the run-off is too plentiful into the bougainvillea growing area.  High nitrogen fertilizers cause plants to grow lots of green growth at the expense of flower and fruit/seeds.  You can amend the soil around the plants with well-composted manure which is a lot better for flowering shrubs.  Don't prune the plant too often because new blooms come on new growth.  The plant will bloom for 6-8 weeks and then take a rest blooming little or not at all for a while.  Overwatering can be a problem, so just water it once a week if you're not experiencing regular rain, otherwise you're drowning the plant.  I hope this helps.
Tom
