Carnations - Problem

Question

Question -
I was able to grow Carnations for years. I moved to another home and planted Carnations last year. The same problem happened last year as what is happening now.
For about 3 weeks they are beautiful, then they start to bend forward, finally the stems lie on the ground. They are planted on the South side in PA and get full sun. I do not have mulch around them. Currently, their blooms are just starting to open.
Can you tell me what is causing this?
Is there a way to recover them?

Appreciative in advance for your help.

Answer -
Hi Joanne,
Sounds like the stems aren't strong enough to hold up the bloom.  Have you fertilized at all?  Try a little Miracle Grow according to the directions on the back of the box.  A change in nutrients in the soil from where you used to live to where you are living now could be responsible for the stems not being as strong as before.  You may also want to stake them.  Hope this helps.

I will get som Miracle Grow and follow up. Should I go ahead and cut them down, due to the stems just lying on the ground. Near the ground there is alot of yellow where it should be green. What do you think about this?

Gee, I appreciate you lending a hand.

Answer
Hi Joanne,
Are the stems turning yellow before the plant falls over?  This could be indicative of a disease like wilt or possibly a pest in the roots.  You may also want to consider moving the plants to another area that gets at least 6 hours of full sun.  I hope this helps.
Tom
