transplant shock

Question
I bought two rose bushes before it was time to plant them, a golden showers and a Don Juan, so I planted them in pots in the house. When it was time to plant I put the golden showers in the ground first and because I had them in very large pots when I took it out it separated the small roots from the large ones, the leaves died off and after even using a root stimulator I had to cut the stems back to let it heal. Finally after a month I am now seeing new growth on the stems. The question is I just planted the Don Juan and the same thing happened and I can tell by wilted leaves on the end of the stems that it is going into shock also should I cut back the stems right away or give it time to snap back on it's own? I live in zone 6 and the biggest town near me is St. Louis MO.
                                   Thank You,

Answer
Roses just hate to be moved or even disturbed and it doesn't take much to put them under stress. This is what has happened to your roses they are under stress. When they go into stress, the roots will shut down and not take up water and nutrients. I would wait until Don Juan recovers and starts to leaf out normally and by then you can see if you need to cut back anywhere. Simply make sure that both roses get water daily as the roots will not function until they are out of stress which could take anywhere from a week to ten days. It won't die and will come back so just be patient.
