crepe myrtle - digging up bulbs now

Question
Can I dig up crepe myrtle bulbs now and refrigerate till I replant somewhere else in the winter with out killing them??

Answer
Hi Pat,
Thanx for your question.  Crape myrtles are trees that often grow as shrubs in cooler climates.  They don't have bulbs but large root balls.  If you must move them now, I would suggest cutting the shrub back to a manageable size and then dig up the rootball and plant it in a tub.  Store the tub in an unheated garage for the winter until you're ready to plant it next spring.  Do you live in a cold area?  I understand there are some cultivars that can be grown as far north as Minnesota.  Used to be crape myrtles didn't do well north of the lower midwest.  I hope this helps.
Tom
