crepe Myrtle insects

Question
We have bugs that are drilling little holes right where the blooms should sprout from the base- and the tree hasn't bloomed yet! WHat types of bugs could these be, and how can we get rid of them?? Thanks!~

Answer
Lyn:
Thanks for your inquiry.  Holes may indicate a potential beetle infestation. Stop by your local garden center and read the label for an insecticide by HI-YIELD called 38 Plus.  The active ingredient is permethrin.  It is most effective when applied before the insect gets ready to feed- such as a trunk spray.  If you are able to collect some of these insects or some tissue with the holes, you can carry them to your local county Extension office for identification.  That is the best first step is to get the bug Id'd.  The insecticide mentioned above is a good general product for lots of insects.

Hope this helps to clear up your "unwanted visitor"

Steve
