late june bloomers

Question
I'm getting married in late June, in Wisconsin, next year and was planning on maybe growing my own flowers for the day. I was wondering what flowers will be blooming in late June early July that are yellow or deep red. I was hoping for tulips and daffodils but I'm open to anything. Thank You.

Answer
Hi Kimberly,
Thanx for your question.  Tulips and daffodils will not be blooming in late June even in Wisconsin.

If you want cut flowers, look for zinnias, sunflowers, roses.  When I say roses, there are a number of varieties of roses that will be blooming at that time.  Don't be afraid to use climing roses which can also have a delightful, gentle scent.

There are a number of types of daylilies that are deep red of course this could get expensive depdening upon how many flowers you need.  Black-eyed Susans and Coreopsis for yellows.  With the zinnias and sunflowers, actually all of these flowers, I would start indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost and grow them under lights to ensure blooms by late June or early July.

Other red flowers you could grow, gerberas, peonies, lobelia, poppy, cockscomb, geraniums, sweet pea.

Other yellow flowers - zinnia, tansy, celosia, gerbera, golden rod, calla lily

I hope this helps.
Tom
