St. Johns Wort

Question
Hi Tom,

I have a question about creeping St. John's wort. How tough and care free is it? I'd like to plant an area about 2 feet by 30 feet long that lies between a walk and the brick side of my basement. The area is on a steep bank from the back of the garage down to the walk-out basement door and faces west. It gets very hot there in the afternoons with full sun against that wall. I'm wondering if St. John's wort will stand up to intense heat with the hot summer days we have been having. I don't want to have to water it a lot. I guess another choice would be to fill the area with stones. I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,
Thanx for your question.  The one issue I might caution you about creeping St. John's wort is that it can be invasive and difficult to control in some situations.  The plant is supposed to be drought tolerant and should be able to stand up to the heat in your area.  Here is a link to Missouri Botanical Gardens you may find interesting.  Personally, I think your selection of Creeping St. John's wort is good for the area you describe.  I hope this helps.
Tom
