Help!!

Question
I love to garden and have an area under 2 trees i have been preparing to make a flower bed in.  Question is...the area is FULL shade and i do not know what to plant here that will grow well????  I would like to plant something in the center of my oval bed that is tall to add privacy from my neighbors.  Help me please!!

Answer
You want flowers under these 2 trees, Angela?  Or is Foliage OK with you?

Hostas, Pachysandra and Ferns would love to grow under your Tree.  If you're thinking an All Green Garden is boring, have a look at Hosta Guacamole (google it and you'll get a lot of hits), imagine a dozen of those planted with another dozen Hosta Plantaginea (which is quite fragrant, too).

Ever see a Painted Fern?  You're in for a treat.

But if you want flowers, the only one I think would be any sort of option is going to be Impatiens and Begonias.  These are quite noticeable and will bloom all Summer with very little light.  Deep Shade of course is another matter.  And if you have nothing growing under there now, including Grass, you are probably better of facing reality and simply putting a thick mulch at the base of these two Trees, to keep away Weeds and make the area neat and tidy.

If you are looking to grow a Privacy Hedge in an area with very little Sun, however, Eastern Hemlocks are the traditional screen of choice.  Unfortunately these are hard to find because of an insect that has been devastating the Hemlocks population and is not yet under control -- they cannot be transported across state lines under Dept of Agriculture rules.  In a few years this will change -- there is a lot of research on controls for this awful insect, and they are really at the point where an effective is going to be made available shortly.

You might try looking at the Bluestone Perennials website:

The Custom Search will allow you to plug in variables and generate a list of plants (with photos) that fit your specs.

I hope this all makes sense -- I am not certain if this is 12 beds or 1 you want to build.  Sorry.  Clarify if you need to and I will re-answer.  Thanks for writing.
