shade

Question
What can I plant in an area that get 95% shade?  The only sun in this area is the very last part of the setting sun

Answer
MMB,

Well, that depends.  If it's in shade because it's under a tree, probably not much.  Trees are not only greedy with light, but also with water & nutrients.

If the area is just in the shade of something...

For low growing stuff try Hosta.  There are lots of varieties of hostas available, including some varigated that lighten up the shade.

A medium sized fill in the gap shrug is Skimmia.  Evergreen, berries.

A shrub/tree that is one of my favorites...try a Camellia.  Either Camillia japonica (late spring bloom, larger leaves) or Camillia sasanqua (winter/early spring blooms, smaller leaves).  These are elegant plants with beautiful flowers and they're easy to prune to keep in any space or size you need.

Groundcovers in the shade...Pachysandra (interesting foliage), or Vinca (nice purple blooms in the spring--periwinkle).

Hope this helps.
