Getting an aster start

Question
My neighbor has a beautiful perennial aster that is called Pink Romance.Very vivid pink flowers. Is it possible that I could get a start from her plant .She said yes but we don't know how or when to do it.  Can we just di a chunk out from her flowers? Please advise..Thank You

Answer
Hello Chris,

You are in luck. Asters are amongst the easiest plants from which to take starts. They actually do better if they are divided every two to three years. Better yet, late summer is an ideal time.

Your instincts are excellent. Yes, you can indeed just take a chunk of her flowers. Your friend can simply dig out the portion that he or she wishes to give to you, and leave the rest in place. You can then, if possible, separate the section given to you into one or more pieces, and plant the sections directly into the ground. It is best to avoid the hottest time of the day, and make certain that they do not dry out before establishing themselves.

How nice that you have such a generous neighbor.

If you have any more questions or concerns please feel free to write again.

Best wishes,

Donna
