Kane House Plant (tree)

Question
Hello Darlene,
I have had a Kane(corn)tree in my house for the past three years. The tree is approximately eight feet tall and in the last four months a sprout has been growing from the base of the trunk. The sprout is 15 inches tall and I have two flowery sprouts out of the top of the tree. The flowery sprouts are very fragrant almost gardenia in smell and getting stronger by the day. The top sprouts have grown two feet in about four weeks time. What can I expect? Should I just wait and see? I also have a sap dripping from the blooms, should I be worried about the tree?
Thanks.

Answer
Victor,

A blooming corn plant indicates the tree is very healthy. The sap from the flowers is normal, they exude a very sticky sap and are very fragrant to attract insects to polinate them. When they are mature they frequently send out side shoots. This plant doesn't mind being rootbound so I would not worry about repotting. If you would like instructions on pruning the plant and using the cuttings to start a new plant let me know. That would cause the original plant to send out even more side shoots. The best time for pruning is in the early spring, March or April. Congratulations, you must be taking excellent care of this plant.

Darlene
