Question
Hi,

We own a palm-like-tree plant that has grown to tall for our house ceiling.  It looks like it has been cut before as several of the limbs have a 揵lack tar?like substance on them covering the cuts.

Is it possible to cut the one tall limb again and what do I do to cover the cut卛f I even have to?   Or can I just cut it?

Thanks for the information

Peter

Answer
Peter,

The black substance is a cut paste used to insure the trunk does not get a bacterial or fungal infection in the cut that could destroy the whole plant. It is not absolutely necessary that you use it but it is a good preventive measure. You can obtain it at many garden centers such as those at Lowes, or Home Depot or Walmart. It will come in a can with a built in swab devise and you just swab it on the new cut.

Yes you can cut the tallest limb off again. If it has been cut off in the past and there are previous stubs I would cut it below any previous stubs so when it grows out again there is only 1 stub. If you want to send me a picture I will identify your plant for you. Good luck.
