infestation

Question
Hello, I had small white drops on a palm tree plant and saw long webs so I threw it out.  Now I have the same thing on an indoor tree plant.
There are a few small white drops that look like milk and dust on the plants (that is hard to tell as they are in a wood factory).  There are no webs between leaves but one or two small webs going to the top of the plant.
I do not want to kill my bosses plant, looking it up on the Internet does not give me a clear answer.
Thank you,
Brenda

Answer
Brenda,

I am not sure what the white drops on the palm tree weere. The long webs were spider mites which attack palms frequently and are fairly easy to get rid of by putting the plant in the shower and spraying them off with a handheld shower or a spray bottle filled with a bottle of half water and half rubbing alcohol.

The indoor tree plant is most likely a ficus tree which when a leaf is damaged or a twig is broken it bleeds a white milky sap. Spray the plant heavily with a guart of water with a teaspoon of dish detergent added and then put in a spray bottle. This spray will get rid of the dust and also kill any insects inhabiting the plant. The spiders causing the webs you described
are probably just everyday spiders such as grand daddy long legs which actually eat other worse insects and do not damage plants. If you see further signs of insects email me. Right now I do not beleive that you have a lot to worry about. Good luck.

Darlene
