palm tree house plant

Question
QUESTION: i was given a palm tree house plant and it was outside till 2days ago now the stems and leaves are dropping?

ANSWER: Lynn,

I need more information than you gave me.
Where do you live and how cold has it gotten there?
What kind of pot is it in?
Does the pot have a drain hole and a drain tray under it so when you water it the excess water can drain out into the drain tray?
How much sun is it getting in your house?
How wet was the previous owner keeping it?

Please answer those 6 questions and I will be able to tell you what the problem is and if you will be able to save the plant.

Answer
Lynn,

I live in northern IN and I have a son in Lewisberg, PA.  I suspect that it has gotten too cold in PA for a tropical palm tree outdoors in the last couple of weeks. They are not real happy below 60 degrees and they hate it below 50 degrees. Below 40 degrees will cause severe damage.

You have moved it indoors from your mothers porch so it is not getting as much light and that makes it even more unhappy. Move it to in front of the sunniest window you have and keep the drapes and blinds opened all day.

Absolutely do not repot it before spring.Keep it in the pot it is in. Transplanting it this time of year with the days getting shorter will put it in shock and cause it to die. You can set the pot it is in now down in the larger pot you have. Pe sure to let it dry out well between waterings. Just use sharp pruners and trim off any collapsed fronds. Don't give up even if most of the fronds die back and be very careful not to overwater it. If you keep it lightly moist there is a ood chance that eventually it will start sending out new growth and regrow into a beautiful plant. It sounds like it may have been kept to wet this summer and may have some root rot that will take awhile for it to recuperate from.  Good luck.
