corn tree

Question
My plant is great, but it is getting to tall for the house, it's over 7 ft now, can i stop it from growing taller without hurting it?

Answer
Hi Tanny,

Pruning back overgrown plant stems does not harm them - it just makes them shorter.

When pruning many plants, including Corn Plants, new growth will emerge from a point on the stem jusr below where you make the pruning cut. So if you prune yours back to 6-feet, then the new growth will start at that height and grow upward. Likewise, if you pruned it back to 5 feet, new growth would start at that height. So, it is up to you to decide how much to prune it back.

The pruned off top portion can be rooted at the base of the existing plant by inserting the cut end into the soil. Or it can be rooted by itself in a separate pot.

So plunge ahead and prune and don't worry!

I have written articles on Corn Plant care and on pruning that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
