indoor cactus-broken

Question
I have raised a big cactus from a baby.  Its the kind that looks like a huge pickle. My daughter kicked it over and hid it,so I wouldnt know. Now its still beautiful but bottom is fleshy and disconnected from its roots. If I replant it will it really grow even though the bottom is just a big empty hole? Thanks   Candy Holyfield

Answer
HI Candy,

Your description is a little unclear so a photo would be more helpful.

If I understand correctly, you can use a sharp knife to make a clean horizontal cut at the bottom of the broken stem - the top portion. Let that heal in the open air for 24 hours. Then insert the stem vertically about an inch deep into a small pot filled with damp Cactus potting mix. Make sure the stem is sturdy enough to stay upright (and out of your daughter's reach!). You may want to use several sticks or stakes on each side to support it for a couple of months while new roots are growing.

During that time, I suggest a light watering or heavy misting of the soil every few days to keep the potting soil just barely moist. It is also important to keep it in a sunny, warm location.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
