indoor plant

Question
Hi
I was wondering if you can tell me.What is wrong with a indoor plant that I have. It's name is Spathiphyllum (peace lily).I have noticed it's not looking health. Its not as green as it use to be & I'm noticing the tips of the leaves are brown. What would be the reason for the brown tips? I was thinking where it was placed isn't right.Because it was getting a lot of sun.So I've moved it & watered it & cut of the brown tips. Should it start to improve now?

Thank you for yr time.

Answer
Hi Julie-ann,

Brown tips are a generic symptom with multiple causes. Allowing the soil to become so dry that the  leaves wilt is one cause. Using hard water for your Peace Lily is another cause. Excess fertilizing will also cause brown tips. Inadequate light may also be a cause. Too much sun causes the laves to turn a pale green or yellow color.

In general, Peace Lilies require lots of bright, but indirect light within several feet of a sunny window but out of the direct rays of the sun. Try to water your plant just before it starts to wilt rather than waiting for it to wilt. If your local tap water is on the hard side, use filtered or distilled water instead. If you fertilize, use in at half strength and no more than once per month.

Trimming off the brown tips is a good idea because it makes the plant look better and it allows you to better monitor the progress of the plant. Although a limited amount of leaf discoloration is inevitable, it should not be excessive and all new leaf growth should be healthy.

I have written an article on Peace Lily care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].
