Thanksgiving Cactus

Question
I need help!! I have a Thanksgiving cactus I took from my grandmother's plant about 4 yrs ago. Its been doing fine, though not had it flower yet, but within the last month or so its become very droopy and darker in color along with what looks like a purple color in spots. I've moved within the last 6 months but was very watchful with it when moving it. I have it next to a window where it gets some sun but it is winter/spring (April). We had a very cold winter and are still having 40 degree weather in April. The window its near does have cold air. Its also near a heater vent (which probably isn't a good idea huh?). I would like to revive it but not sure what to do. Please help!

Thank you,
Stacie

Answer
Hi Stacie,

Your holiday Cactus is exhibiting symptoms that usually occur on these plants during the winter months after its flowering period at the end of the year. After flowering, it usually goes semi-dormant during which time it looks rather pathetic and more purple than green. It is important not to do too much during this period. That means reducing water frequency and not fertilizing or disturbing the roots in any way. It will take a great deal of patience. Cool temps are okay, but the heater is not so good for it.

I have written an article on holiday flowering plant care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
