wisconsin winter

Question
Hello, I live in Wisconsin and I have a small bog garden that is currently under about 6 inches of mulch. thats been an good cover for most of the winter, but now I've gotten news that the temperature is going to go down to
negative ten degrease Fahrenheit for 4 or 5 days. do you think they can ride it out our should i call it quits and bring them inside

Answer
Hi Jared,

You have a couple of options here.  One is to add additional mulch.  Ideally, you should have at least a foot in regions as cold as yours.  If your bog garden is small enough, and it's possible to bring them into an unheated garage or similar structure, that is great also.  What you don't want to do is bring them into a warm house.  If you break the plants dormancy then you have to baby them through the rest of the winter indoors which carries just as much, if not more risk because of fungal problems.

Generally most warm temperate cp can handle really cold temperatures when thoroughly buried.  This keeps them from dehydrating.  Dehydration is what usually kills the plants, not cold alone.

Good Growing!
