winter dormency in Keywest

Question

I grow all my plants outside and are grown just like in your care sheets.

Answer
Hi Jesus,

Your Sarracenia will be just fine.  Key West isn't so far south that you don't experience a decrease in daylight hours.  That will be enough to give them short dormancy.  We have a good friend that lives on Hawaii's Big Island that has Sarracenia, and he says they do just fine.  They go through a short dormancy, then start growing again.

With your dewthread, it may need some colder temperatures.  Watch to see if it starts dying down to its hibernacula in a month or so.  When it does, take it out of the soil, spray it with a sulfur based fungicide, put it in a ziploc, bag and refrigerate it for two months.  Check it weekly to make sure no mold is forming.  After two months repot them and put them back outside.  Do the same with the flytraps, but wait until November.  Overall your looking for signs that the plants are trying to go dormant on their own as your cue to put them under refrigeration.

Good Growing!
