Winter in Chicago

Question
Darlene, I have a deck with: millions bells, quick fire, bridal veil, honey maid holly and verbena. Can you tell me if these plants will make it through the winter outside in Chicago? Which do I need to bring into the house? I live in a small apartment, third floor, lots of light. Currently the deck faces North. Any advice is welcome.
Monica

Answer
Monica,

Million bells (the latin name is Calibrachoa),Tahitian Bridal Veil (the latin name is Tripogandra multiflora) and Verbena are all tropical perennials and will not survive the winter in Chicago outdoors. If you take them indoors for the winter be careful not to overwater them. They will need less water because the days are shorter.

Ilex x meservae 'Honey Maid'?and Quick Fire Hydrangea can survive the winter if they are in large pots. They will still need a little water through the winter but not a lot. Water them once a month and not as much as you give them during the summer.

Good luck.

Darlene
