Sarracenia catesbei

Question
hi Jacob or Jeff, sorry to be annoying but I have a Sarracenia catesbei and i want to know how high does it get when maturity, plus can you self polinate a Sarracenia & Venus fly traps, I heard it can cause some problems with the plant.

Answer
Hi Aaron,

Sarracenia x catesbei will usually get around 6 to 8 inches tall.  It depends greatly on the clones of flava or purpurea involved in the cross.  The most common natural cross is S. flava typical with S. purpurea ssp. venosa.  However, if the cross is with S. rosea (S. purpurea venosa var. burkeii) it can be much taller.  This clone is what what the California Carnivores cultivar, "Abandon Hope"is.  The cp taxonomy nerds would consider this a different hybrid these days, and wouldn't call it S. x catesbei.

Sarracenia will not self-pollinate well.  You get very few seeds.  Similar with flytraps, but I've noticed you will get decent seed set if you cross pollinate flowers on the same plant.

Good Growing!
