flowering sarracenia

Question
Hi,

I have a Sarracenia hybrid (it involves S leucophylla and either S flava, S rubra or S oreophila) and even though it's January, two are sending a flowerstalk. The flowerstalks are very small but they are clear. I live in the ultrahighlans of Mexico (zone 9), which is similar to florida at night I guess but it's warmer during the day. There's also some new growth on the plant. I don't know wether this is normal, I was thinking of leaving it outside and the flowerstalk will simply grow very slowly...

Thanks, Alonso

Answer
Hi Alonso,

Because you are further south than their native habitat, and your days will be a little longer, this is very normal.  Even up here in Oregon we can see the first emergence of a a flower stalk on Sarracenia flava as early as late February if the winter has been a little warm.  I would say just leave them out and let them be.  You'll see a blossom in about a month to month and a half depending on temperatures.  Customers in California frequently see flowers in March.

Good Growing!
