Dionea seeds

Question
Do you have to start Dionea muscipula seeds indoors?  I ordered 25 and they said to grow them in a plastic bag on a sunny window until they have new leaves.  Should I?  I live in zone 7/6, Ellensburg, WA
John

Answer
Hi John,

It's better if you don't do them in a bag.  That's just asking for all kinds of problems.  Just sow them in pots, then put them in your sunny window.  Soak and drain your peat moss for a day before using it to minimize algae growth.  Here's more details:  http://www.growcarnivorousplants.com/Articles.asp?ID=271

Did your seller indicate how old the seeds are?  Venus flytraps have a roughly 90 day viability from when their ripe on the flower stalks.  They last about a year under refrigeration.

Good Growing!
