Cutting a cactus in half

Question
Hi Greg,

I have a huge (about 8ft) cactus that has outgrown the house.  We live in Ohio and will have to move it inside this winter and i dont think its gonna fit.  Can I cut it in half and plant the top part? I dont want to kill it, and I am scared if I do cut it, it will die.

Answer
Dear Nancy,

Most cactus will survive being cut back very well. As a matter of fact, after you take the cutting you can replant the top part (just make sure to let it "heal" for at least a couple of weeks prior to replanting).

Make sure to use a very sharp knife or a hack saw. Be VERY careful and get some help. Be wary of the spines and try not to bruise or damage the plant. You cactus should sprout arms just below the cut during the next growing season. Good luck and let me know if you need any more specifics. If you do, please include a very detailed description of the plant, thanks!

Sincerely,

Greg
