Cutting cactus plants

Question
I have cactus plants in an outdoor planter on the balcony of my apartment in a high-rise building.  They are hitting the ceiling of the balcony and twisting I want to know if I can cut them down and how to do it.  Thank you.

Answer
Gail,

You can use pruning shears or a very sharp knife. Make sure you get someone to help you so the cuttings don't fall on you. I would cut it back at least 50%, but if you can wait until spring, that would be best. Any new growth this time of year would be very susceptible to frost bite (depending on where you live).

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
