Candelabra Cactus

Question

candelabra cactus
Hi Maureen, my 4 foot candelabra cactus was frost bitten during our latest freezing night here in Phoenix.  Some of the arms are wilted and drooping and look like they are dead. Should I cut these off at the elbow? The main part of the cactus looks ok. But I am really unsure how to proceed. Thank you

Answer
Dear Linnea,

So sorry for the delay.  Yes, by all means cut the dead limbs off.  You can eithr cut back to the main stem or cut back to healthy tissue on the damaged branches.  Eventually new growth will mask the amputations.  Be sure to use a sterilized knife (re-steralize after each cut) and brush with fungicide or Rootone if you don't have fungicide.

It's been a tough winter for cacti.

If I can help you any further please let me know.

Maureen
