Repotting a cactus

Question
I brought back a round VERY spikey cactus from lanzarote in march, it seems to be potted in lava stones from the island.  It really could do with being repotted.  What is the best way of doing this?  can i put it in a much larger pot and what sort of composte would it thrive in.

Answer
Sandra,

Cactus are very happy being root bound. In nature, many grow in what seems to be pure rock. If your plant is too tall and your worried about it falling over, transplant it into a pot twice the size of the one you have it in now. As far as soil, use a "cactus mix" type soil that is available at a local nursery. The best way to handle a very spiny cactus is with hot dog tongs. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
