Cutting back my Cactus

Question
I live in New York and my Cactus grew about 3 feet this summer. It is now to big to bring in my house. Can I cut it back, and what should I do with the piece I cut off? I think it is a Pilosocercus Rosce or it looks a lot like it.
Help it is getting cold outside. Once I cut it back how do I tend to the area?

Answer
Shelley,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You can replant the piece that you cut off, just let it dry out for at least 3 weeks prior to replanting. After 3 weeks or so, you can plant it directly into soil, water it (but only after the soil had dried out completely after each watering). It may take up to 4 or 5 months this time of year to root, if it does at all (spring is a better time to plant cuttings). Anyway, good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
