Tulip Tree illness

Question
Dr. Vann;

My parents have two tulip trees that are dripping a slimy sap-like substance. Sorry, I don't have any pictures.
These trees are very old, possibly 40 years or more. This is the first year they have not bloomed at all. Instead, they just drip slimy sap, almost like a rain fall.

What could be wrong and how can it be treated?

thanks

Kelley

Answer
Kelly:
If this stuff tends to be sticky and shiny and you notice it on tops of cars, patio furniture etc., it may be a substance called "honey dew".  This is a sugary excretment of an insect. Several insects that feed on leaves and stems can produce this stuff. It looks like fine droplets that are clear but sticky. Best to be sure that this is the problem first.  There are a couple of insecticides out there that can be applied to the soil under the tree.  It is taken up by the tree.  Based on the size of the tree, it may take a long while before it afects the insects.  If this is honeydew and there are insects there, usually they won't have a significant enough impact to adversely affect the tree- thus treatment may not be warranted. I would doubt if the lack of blooms is a result of the insects- probably some underlying issue.
