Yukka tree diseases

Question
Hi, Like Brian whose letter I have read, my Yukka tree has suffered from the snow and excessive cold this Winter.
All the bunches of leaves have dropped off and now the tree is a bare five sticks standing and looking very sad.
I have just noticed that at the bottom of the trunks there are dark wet looking patches and from the edges there is pinkish thick material oozing out. Is this tree now dead, and if not when can I expect to see any signs of recovery?

Answer
Hi Marion:
From your description, sounds like the plant may indeed be in a terminal condition. The ooze may be cellular contents leaking from damaged tissues.  If there are any living portions, I would expect to see signs of new sprouts/leaves when temperatures are consistent at mid 70's (F)for 3-4 weeks. If no evidence is present after that time, you may consider replacement. The cold damage may have been so severe this winter that replacement is still the best option.

If you wish, you can send me a photo of the plant.  Be sure to review it on your computer first- to be sure it is in focus before you send.

Regards
Steve
